About J-DESC
OVERVIEW
J-DESC is the Japanese national office for the international cooperative scientific drilling programs IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) and ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program). The consortium supports involvment of the Japanese scientific community in the drilling earth science.
J-DESC consists of IODP section and Continental drilling section. The IODP section addresses science support for scientists and technishians involving IODP. The Continental drilling section works for the scientific support on continental and lake drilling projects.
ACTIVITIES
- supporting plannning activities and Japanese participation in the Science Advisory Structure (SAS) of IODP and ICDP
- supporting travel for Japan-based scientists to participate in IODP drilling expeditions, pre-expedition trainings, and post-expedition activities
- encouraging advance activities that further the development of scientific drilling proposals, IODP expeditions, and ICDP projects
- enhancing the partnership of organizations and scientists in the drilling earth science
- developing educational and community engagement programs that expose the Japanese populace and potential scientists to the science arising from scientific drilling research
