IODP New Ventures in Exploring Scientific Targets (INVEST)
J-DESC holds domestic workshops to brush up and put together Japanese scientists' ideas in the ocean drilling science for IODP New Ventures in Exploring Scientific Targets (INVEST). First, breakout workshops for five subjects, Deep Biosphere & Sub-seafloor Aquifer, Earth's Interior, Geohazard, Paleoenvironment, and Technology Development were taken place in December, 2008. Then, we will have the cross-sectoral plenary workshop on Jan. 12th and Feb. 15th, 2009.

University of Bremen, Germany
INVEST is being organized as a large, multidisciplinary, international community meeting, whose focus is to define the scientific research goals of the second phase of the IODP, expected to begin late in 2013. INVEST is open to all interested scientists and students as the principal opportunity for international science community members to help shape the future of scientific ocean drilling. The goals of INVEST are to:
1. synthesize and summarize the state of knowledge across major interdisciplinary geoscience themes;
2. identify emerging science fields;
3. develop new research initiatives and recommend scientific implementation strategies;
4. address societal relevance of future drilling; and
5. outline fiscal and technological needs.
